Throughout the Kansas City Chiefs’ road to Super Bowl LVIII, there have been rumors suggesting that head coach Andy Reid may retire after facing the San Francisco 49ers. Already viewed as one of the best head coaches in NFL history, there now appears to be more definitive knowledge on Reid’s future.
Reid, who turns 66 in March, has been coaching since 1982 as a graduate assistant at BYU. He transitioned to the NFL a decade later with the Green Bay Packers and has been an NFL head coach since 1999 with the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Now of the oldest coaches in football, speculation has ramped up regarding Reid’s future. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has led the speculation, with others suggesting there was an increased belief around the NFL that Reid could retire if he wins Super Bowl LVIII.
In their final ESPN NFL insider column before the Super Bowl, Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano provided more clarity on Reid’s situation and seemed to point in a definitive direction for the Chiefs’ future.
According to Graziano, those close to the situation “would be very surprised” if Reid walked away after this season. In fact, there’s a greater belief that Kansas City will adjust his contract this offseason.
“I think we can expect the Chiefs to address Reid’s contract this offseason and bring it more in line with the market. My understanding is that Reid makes something in the range of $12 million per year.”

Reid has put together one of the best coaching staffs in the NFL and with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback, there is less weight on his shoulders to carry the team or offense. Furthermore, it’s widely believed that the past two years have been a retooling period for the Chiefs with plans to improve the receiving corps this offseason.
Despite speculation, it seems evident that Reid has no plans to retire and the same goes for All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce. If the Chiefs lose Super Bowl LVIII to the 49ers, Kansas City’s Hall of Fame trio will be back for the 2024 NFL season.
