After an unimpressive season with the Indianapolis Colts, the team released veteran wide receiver Andre Johnson on Friday.
Though 34 years old, Johnson still feels he has something to contribute and is wants to continue playing in 2016.
“I am playing, there’s no question about that,” he said, via Austin Knoblauch of NFL.com. “I know I can still play this game…people read into the stories too much. I’m not discouraged about what happened this past season, I’m just waiting for an opportunity.”
Johnson’s one-and-done season with the Colts saw the wideout post his worst stats in 13 years. Used sparingly and targeted just 77 times, Johnson tallied only 503 yards on 41 catches and scored four touchdowns.
Letting Johnson go frees up $5 million in cap space for the Colts.
Entering free agency as one of the oldest receivers in the league, Johnson is hopeful that he can eventually retire as a Super Bowl winner.
“It’s about winning a championship. Somewhere I can help a team accomplish the ultimate goal.”
After a down season and due to his age, any team interested in signing Johnson can surely obtain him with a bargain-bin contract.
Over the course of Johnson’s illustrious 13-year NFL career, he has achieved All-Pro status twice and has participated in seven Pro Bowls. Adding a Super Bowl ring to his list of accomplishments would certainly be the icing on the cake for the potential Hall of Famer.
