Ameer Abdullah “hoping” to return kicks for Lions

Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah solidified a spot in the offensive rotation during the preseason, but the rookie is hoping for an even bigger role outside of the backfield.

According to Josh Katzenstein of The Detroit News, Abdullah said he would appreciate a chance to contribute in the return game. Abdullah said of potentially taking on those responsibilities:

“I’m hoping so. Any way I can be on the field, I hope I can out there. If they give me any work at all as a returner, I’d be grateful.”

The Lions recently cut Jeremy Ross, who returned 38 kicks for the team over the last two seasons. That move came as a small surprise, though Abdullah’s presence likely eliminated the need for a specialist. Abdullah recorded two kicks during the preseason for 47 yards.

As a freshman at Nebraska, Abdullah ripped off a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown against Fresno State.

The next year, he took a punt to the house, too. Overall, Abdullah averaged 26.1 and 10.2 yards per kick and punt return, respectively, while at Nebraska.

Abdullah will compete with Golden Tate, Josh Wilson, Quandre Diggs and TJ Jones for the limited opportunities. However, if the Lions aren’t afraid to utilize a regular offensive contributor, Abdullah or Tate will either handle both duties or split time as the returners.
