Things got pretty ugly towards the end of the 2014 season in San Francisco between the team and former head coach Jim Harbaugh. He even indicated recently that he felt the team abandoned him. Harbaugh also refused to shoot down rumors that new 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula was after his job all season.
When former 49ers’ quarterback Alex Smith was questioned about the changes in the team’s regime, he expressed shock (via the San Jose Mercury News).
I think for me, it’s still just tough to believe all those guys are gone, all that turnover. There were a lot of ballgames that got won over the last few years, but for whatever reason, they couldn’t make it work. I don’t know. I wish coach Tomsula well. I wish him the best.
While shocked, Smith did have some glowing comments regarding Tomsula, who coached the 49ers for one game in a 38-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals after Mike Singletary was fired back in 2010.
I loved what he brought to the team that week. I know he has the ability to be a head coach. He’s a good man, a really good coach. I’m pulling for him.
Tomsula will definitely have his work cut out for him following the loss Harbaugh as well as offensive coordinator Greg Roman and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Additionally, the 49ers could be without some of their veterans. Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree and Mike Iupati are all slated to become free agents next month.
