It’s safe to say the New York Jets’ plan to compete for a Super Bowl with Aaron Rodgers failed in 2023, but that doesn’t mean anyone involved with the organization is giving up hope in 2024.
Rodgers’s season ended after just four snaps, but after attacking his rehab process, he’ll have no trouble being back to 100% by the time training camp begins. Yet, before the Jets get to camp, Rodgers says they need to add a few players to the roster. Based on the fact that this is a group that currently ranks 30th in scoring, he’s not wrong.
Quarterback play has been an issue ever since Rodgers tore his Achilles, but aside from maybe adding a more competent backup, either to help Zach Wilson or to replace him, the Jets are still mostly set at the position with Rodgers returning.
Elsewhere? Improvements are necessary, and Rodgers has made that clear.
On Thursday, when interviewed by the Thursday Night Football crew, Rodgers offered a few Jets team needs the front office must address this offseason.
“Offensively, I think we need to just shore up the offensive line a little bit. We’ve had a lot of injuries. We’ve had a lot of moving pieces, a lot of different offensive lines throughout the year, so we’ve got to shore that up a little bit. There’s not a lot of holes, I think. We just gotta reload another piece here and there, and maybe add another skill player on the outside, but I like the pieces that are in place moving forward.”
Aaron Rodgers on New York Jets’ 2024 team needs
The Jets brought in a couple of Rodgers’s former Green Bay teammates at receiver, including Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard, yet it’s become clear more help is needed alongside Garrett Wilson.
As for the offensive line? Zach Wilson has the NFL’s highest sack rate in the NFL this season. Is it his inexperience, the Jets’ receivers not getting open, a porous protection scheme, or just a flat-out failure to get the ball out on time?
That’s just one of the many factors the Jets must figure out this offseason, but with Rodgers set to return, they can focus on improving the receiving corps and the offensive line. The rest should take care of itself with Rodgers under center.
