Report: Former Packers coach Mike McCarthy interviewed for Panthers HC job

The Carolina Panthers have reportedly interviewed former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy as they look to replace Ron Rivera, who was fired earlier this season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports McCarthy was interviewed after the team’s blowout loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

This news seems to indicate the Panthers will be focused on looking at offensive-minded head coaches. If so, it would be a huge shift after nearly nine seasons under the defensive-minded Rivera.

McCarthy coached the Packers for 13 seasons, taking them to the playoffs nine times and winning Super Bowl XLV with the franchise.

Before he was hired as the head coach in Green Bay, McCarthy spent over two decades as an offensive assistant. He’s likely going to be a hot name during the offseason for teams looking at new head coaches, if the Panthers don’t strike first and hire him.
