Just a few days after Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost retired, it appears an in-house candidate is reportedly emerging to take over as the team’s skipper.
According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, former St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny is now the favorite to become Kansas City’s skipper.
According to the report, Kansas City loved its in-house candidates with Matheny, Pedro Grifol and Dale Sveum all impressing. However, those outside the organization believe Matheny holds the inside track.
Matheny served as the Cardinals manager from 2012-’18. St. Louis won 591 games during his tenure with a .555 winning percentage and four consecutive playoff appearances from 2012-’15.
After being fired in the middle of the 2018 season, Kansas City hired Matheny as a special advisor of player development.
