Riding the wave of his ball-hawking defense, second year quarterback Kyle Allen led his Carolina Panthers to a 37-26 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in London Sunday morning.
Allen is now 4-0 as the team’s starter since taking over for an injured Cam Newton. Dating back to his rookie season, the former undrafted free agent is 5-0 as a starter.
Needless to say, there could be a quarterback controversy brewing in Carolina once Newton returns from injury. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera did nothing to throw cold water on that idea following Sunday’s game.
There’s certainly something to be said about riding the hot arm. Allen completed 20-of-32 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions in another mistake-free performance on Sunday. He’s now thrown seven touchdowns and zero picks in four starts.
Meanwhile, Newton has lost each of his last eight starts while under center for Carolina.
It would be shocking for Carolina to bench a former league MVP for an undrafted free agent. But Allen has done nothing to give the job back to Newton.
