The Denver Broncos might as well give their young quarterbacks an opportunity as the season progresses. At 2-6 on the year, they are just playing out the string.
Regardless of the reasoning, that will start next week against the Cleveland Browns. Head coach Vic Fangio announced that starter Joe Flacco will miss next week’s game against the Browns with a neck injury. Brandon Allen will start.
This seemingly comes out of left field. Flacco played down the stretch in a narrow loss to the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. He was overly critical of the conservative nature of the team’s coaching staff.
Whether that played a role in the announcement on Monday remains to be seen.
Acquired from the Baltimore Ravens during the offseason, Flacco has put up just 1,822 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions in eight starts this season. He’s leading the NFL’s 28th-ranked scoring offense.
With Allen starting next Sunday, rookie second-round pick Drew Lock could act as the backup. Fangio noted that he’s eligible to come off injured reserve and could be activated for the game.
