It was bound to happen a some point soon. This has been the most homer happy Major League Baseball season in history. That was all but confirmed Wednesday.
Oakland Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien hit a homer off Houston Astros opener José Urquidy in the bottom of the fourth. This tied the all-time mark of 6,105 homers in a single season.
A short while later, Baltimore Orioles infielder Jonathan Villar cranked a three-run blast off Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Caleb Ferguson. That broke the single-season mark.
In terms of pace, this season is slated to slaughter the previous record. We’ve seen an average of 1.4 homers per game thus far this season compared to 1.26 in 2017, which held the previous record.
But there’s nothing to the idea that baseballs are juiced, right?
