The Carolina Panthers turned to second-year quarterback Kyle Allen to save their season Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.
Replacing an injured Cam Newton, Allen completed 19-of-26 passes with four touchdowns in a 38-20 win over Arizona.
Panthers head coach Ron Rivera already announced on Monday that Newton is out for next week’s game against the Houston Texans. He also noted that there is no real timeline for his return from the foot injury the former MVP suffered in Week 2.
In what can’t be considered great news, Rivera refused to rule out surgery.
Newton orignally suffered the injury in his preseason debut after undergoing shoulder surgery during the offseason. He then re-aggregated it in a Week 2 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Allen has put up six touchdowns and zero interceptions in two starts since entering the league as an undrafted free agent last year.
For his part, Newton has lost each of his last eight starts and has thrown nine touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions during that span.
