Stephen Jones doesn’t think Cowboys are close to deal with Ezekiel Elliott

Despite reports that a deal with Ezekiel Elliott could be coming any day now, Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones thinks it could still be a while before a contract is agreed to by both parties.

Speaking during his weekly appearance with 105.3 The Fan, Jones was asked if a deal will happen soon, he replied, “I don’t think we’re close because there’s not a lot of activity.”

Jones did say he’s “optimistic” that the Cowboys will have all their stars on the field, and hinted that things could come together quickly: “We feel confident things will get done” said Jones. “Things happen real quick, sometime within hours.”

Elliott has not been with the Cowboys since they opened camp in late July. It remains to be seen how far apart the two sides are in any negotiations, but recent reports indicate the ‘Boys are set to make him the second highest-paid running back in the league.

Based on the fact that Elliott retweeted the following on Friday morning, though, that may not be enough:

Tick, tock, goes the clock.

The Cowboys open the season against the New York Giants in just a couple short weeks. Will Elliott be with them, or will rookie Tony Pollard get his chance to prove Jerry Jones right?
