Former MLB first-round pick Alex Meyer retires at 29

Alex Meyer

Alex Meyer, a first-round pick of the Washington Nationals who spent time with the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels, has retired.

Meyer took to Instagram on Tuesday, saying that “After multiple surgeries and countless hours of rehab, the end of the road for my baseball career has come.”

Meyer was taken by the Nationals in the first round of the 2011 MLB draft. Following the 2012 season, he was traded to the Twins. He finally broke through to the majors in 2015. The following year, Meyer was traded to the Angels at the trade deadline.

He was placed on the Injured List in July of 2017 with a right shoulder injury. That caused him to miss the rest of that season and all of 2018.

In his career, Meyer posted a 5-8 record with a 4.63 ERA and 1.46 WHIP while striking out 107 batters in only 95.1 innings.

While his career didn’t last long, Meyer did go out in style. On July 19, 2017, in what would be the final appearance of his MLB career, Meyer went seven shutout innings, allowing only one hit, one walk, and striking out seven. In doing so, he pitched the Angels to a win against the Nationals, the team that drafted him.
