The Chicago Bears currently have eight kickers vying for the job of starting placekicker heading into the 2019 NFL season.
The obvious reason for such apparent overkill is that last year’s starter, Cody Parkey, cost the Bears a playoff game with his infamous double-doink from 43 yards out.
Amazingly, one of the kickers the Bears signed has his own history of double-doinking a kick.
The team’s kicker competition got off to an incredibly hilarious start on Friday when all eight kickers lined up from 43 yards out and only two of them managed to make it.
Speaking on all that, starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky called it “a fascinating spectacle.”
“The whole thing behind them has become a fascinating spectacle right now,” Trubisky said, via Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times. “That’s even what I’m interested in now. We’re gonna be out at practice, and I’ll be keeping track of who’s making and who’s missing and who’s winning the competition.”
It’s all just too funny for those of us who have no emotional stake in the outcome of this kicker competition.
Meanwhile, Bears fans have no recourse but to try and hold on for dear life as they plead with the football gods for a kicker who can actually come through.
