Coming into Sunday’s game against the New York Mets, Washington Nationals reliever Trevor Rosenthal had yet to record a single out against seven batters.
If ever there was a perfect opportunity to let Rosenthal work out the kinks, it was Sunday’s game as the Nationals were up 12-6 when he entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Unfortunately, his trend of putrid pitching continued.
Facing pinch hitter Dominic Smith, Rosenthal plunked him.
Then, facing Luis Guillorme, Rosenthal walked him on four pitches, three of which were wild pitches that allowed Smith to get all the way to third base.
Not surprisingly, Rosenthal was pulled after just the two batters and replaced by Wander Suero, who promptly struck his first batter out.
Needless to say, it might be a while before Rosenthal gets another shot at this. He’s now failed to record a single out this season facing nine batters.
