Cardinals close to signing Paul Goldschmidt to $130 million extension, per report

The St. Louis Cardinals apparently didn’t acquire six-time All-Star Paul Goldschmidt over the winter to be a short-term option at first base.

Months after picking him up from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a blockbuster trade, St. Louis is close to signing Goldschmidt to a five-year, $130 million extension.

Given some of the contracts we’ve seen handed out this winter/spring, this seems to be somewhat of a bargain.

Goldschmidt, 31, has earned six All-Star appearances and three Gold Glove awards during his stellar MLB career.

He’s coming off a 2018 campaign that saw the veteran hit .290 with 33 homers, 83 RBI and a .389 on-base percentage.
