Chiefs rumors: Could team fire DC Bob Sutton?

The Kansas City Chiefs fell short of their ultimate goal this season. Having earned home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, Andy Reid’s squad had its eye on the Lombardi Trophy.

That didn’t come to fruition. Instead, Kansas City lost a heartbreaker at home against the New England Patriots in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game. It’s a game that saw the Chiefs’ defense fail to get to Tom Brady for even one sack.

Following the loss, it’s being reported that the Chiefs might fire longtime defensive coordinator Bob Sutton.

This really shouldn’t be considered too much of a surprise. Sutton’s defense struggled tremendously during an otherwise great season for the Chiefs. It included the following league-wide rankings.

  • Yards allowed: 31st
  • Points per game: 24th
  • Rushing defense: 27th
  • passing defense: 31st

Kansas City’s defensive coordinator for the past six years, Sutton has overseen a regression each of the past five seasons in both points and yards allowed. It could be time for the two to part ways.
