San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman spoke about the rest of his career on Thursday.
While Sherman isn’t planning on retiring any time soon, he does have a sense of when he’ll call it a career.
“I think 35 is probably my cutoff,” Sherman said in a media session on Thursday. “They’d have a hard time getting me out of the bed at 35 to go play so I think I’ve got about four or five more in me.”
If that’s accurate, we can expect Sherman to stick around through 2022. He’ll turn 35 before the 2023 season kicks off.
Before Sherman retires, he does expect a position change to safety.
“At some point, everybody makes the transition to safety and if you’re smart enough to play that game, and I’ll probably do that in a couple of years or whenever the team needs,” he said.
Very little that’s happened in 2019 has indicated that Sherman needs to think about retiring, or even changing positions, any time soon.
He has dealt with some injuries. But overall, he’s remained highly effective on the field. It’s entirely possible that he’ll make his fifth Pro Bowl and/or his fourth All-Pro team in this season.
