As the New York Jets look to hire a new head coach, one name can be scratched off of the list. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has reportedly declined an interview.

It’s hard to determine what this means for the Jets going forward. Obviously a coach not even wanting to interview is a bad sign. That said, New York has a young quarterback in Darnold and a lot of cap space — making the job at least somewhat appealing. The drawback, of course, is that the Jets haven’t made the playoffs since 2010, posting only one winning season (2015) along the way.
We can certainly see why Campbell was appealing. He has an offensive background, which New York will likely look for as it continues to develop Sam Darnold. Campbell’s record in three years with the Cyclones is 19-19, but he’s gone 8-5 in each of the last two seasons. Previously he went 35-15 in five seasons as Toledo’s head coach.
