The Seattle Mariners have activated second baseman Robinson Cano, who has completed his 80-game suspension due to PEDs.
In a corresponding roster move, right-handed pitcher Casey Lawrence was optioned to Tacoma. Additionally, per Greg Johns of MLB.com, Sam Tuivailala was placed on the 60-day DL to open a spot on the 40-man roster.
Cano has been playing in the minors since August 6, when he began his rehab assignment. In five games, he had a .389 average with two home runs and 6 RBI.
The Mariners, who are 4.5 games out of first place in the American League West and 2.5 games behind the Oakland Athletics for the second wild-card spot behind New York, are going to have to play things carefully as Cano comes back.
When he was suspended, the team made it clear that Cano could be splitting time at second base upon his return. On that note, it’s worth mentioning he’s been working out at first base, and Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto indicated that’s where he’ll play a lot the rest of the season.
If the Mariners do make the playoffs, Cano is not eligible to play.
