On Monday, Carolina Panthers starting cornerback Ross Cockrell went down with an injury and had to be carted off the field.
Immediately after suffering his injury, Cockrell was yelling that he had broken his leg. That turned out to be the case, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.
Cockrell played for the New York Giants last year, was with the Pittsburgh Steelers for two years before that and was originally a fourth-round pick out of Duke, selected by the Buffalo Bills in 2014.
He signed a two-year, $6.6 million contract in free agency to join Carolina this past spring.
Over the course of his four-year career, Cockrell has started 32 games, tallying 155 tackles, five interceptions and 36 pass breakups.
Now that he’s no longer available, the Panthers would no doubt love to see second-round rookie Donte Jackson take big strides this summer as he attempts to fill the void.
