Just before the July 31 deadline, the Atlanta Braves upgraded their starting rotation depth, acquiring Kevin Gausman from the Baltimore Orioles.

Gausman won’t be an ace in Atlanta, but he does figure to be a valuable addition to the rotation. In 21 starts this season, he’s posted a 4.43 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP for Baltimore. In his career, Gausman has a 4.22 ERA and 1.35 WHIP.
This is certainly a risk worth taking. While he’s been around a while, it’s important to remember that Gausman is only 27. He also has two years of arbitration left before becoming a free agent after the 2020 season. He’s already a mid-rotation guy and by the time that ends, could certainly turn a corner.
