The entire national anthem drama that has taken up too much of our time over the past two seasons will likely continue into the 2018 NFL campaign.
Earlier this week, the NFL and NFLPA announced in a joint statement that they will not enforce new rules relating to protesting during the anthem.
Immediately following that, President Donald Trump put commissioner Roger Goodell and the players on blast through his personal Twitter account.
Now chiming in on the issue, New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch has decided to return the favor.
“Hopefully he’ll have much more going on that he’s going have to deal with and should deal with and must deal with than worrying about what NFL players do,” Tisch told The Hollywood Reporter. “He (Trump) has no understanding of why they take a knee or why they’re protesting. When the new season starts, I hope his priorities are not criticizing the NFL and telling owners what to do and what not to do.”
Tisch went on to note that Giants players will not be disciplined for protesting during the national anthem this coming season.
Being a producer in Hollywood, it stands to reason that Tisch would have more of a liberal slant. During the 2008 election cycle, Tisch gave solely to democrats, then presidential candidate Barack Obama included. He also donated to Hillary Clinton’s campaign back in 2016.
Despite his partisan politics, Tisch isn’t necessarily wrong here. With what’s going on in the world, maybe Mr. Trump should focus less on football players and more on other, more important things.
On the same note, maybe NFL players should find another avenue to protest as a way to help fans enjoy football and avoid the divisive politics that defines America today. After all, it is an entertainment outlet.
