Duke University men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski stands by himself with the most wins in Division 1 basketball history after his Blue Devils defeated Rhode Island in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
With the win, Coach K surpasses the legendary Pat Summitt with the most wins in either men’s or women’s history. On the bench in Durham since 1980, Krzyzewski has won a whopping 1,099 games as the program’s head coach.
Rather than focus on his tremendous accomplishment, the always humble head coach shouted out the late-great Summitt, who he surpassed on Saturday.
"The lady who had that record would have run hundreds more. Pat Summitt was as good of a coach as there was."

Summitt coached the Volunteers women’s team from 1974-2012, earning NCAA Coach the Year honors seven times and bringing Tennessee a whopping eight national championships during her time in Knoxville. Summitt passed away back in June of 2016, years after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
It’s pretty classy of Coach K to focus on her after he just broke such an impressive record. We applaud him for that.
