According to one former New England Patriots player, Josh McDaniels has made it clear that he’s in no way guaranteed to take over in the event Bill Belichick retires.
There was some speculation to the contrary when McDaniels shockingly betrayed the Indianapolis Colts this past week. But Willie McGinest, speaking on NFL Network, said the coach himself has made it clear there is “absolutely not” an agreement in place with the Patriots to succeed Belichick. Additionally, he said there is no “handshake deal” in place, either.
“At some point Belichick may retire but it’s not gonna be in the contract and you’re not gonna tell him when he’s gonna retire,” McGinest said (h/t Pro Football Talk).
In the end, McGinest said McDaniels just wanted security, and he has that in New England. Just don’t expect him to be a hot name next year when new head coaching jobs open up. Because as Tony Dungy noted after the fact, this is something other teams won’t soon forget.
