After the Josh McDaniels debacle, the Indianapolis Colts rebounded nicely to land former Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich. He’s already made it clear that he’ll call the plays and run a no-huddle-heavy offense, which is a huge reason Andrew Luck is happy about the hire.
Luck spoke in depth about the development in an interview with Colts.com and said he Luck said he was “really excited, and really happy for everybody involved in the Colts” when Reich was hired.
Then, when the up-tempo approach was mentioned, he lit up some more.
“That sounds great,” Luck said with a smile Thursday in a video chat with Colts.com. “I know all the best offenses that I’ve been a part of in my career we’ve not been static and we’ve attacked. And I’m sure he’ll have a great flavor and we’ll involve as many people as we can, and attacking defenses is what it’s all about.”
Some of Luck’s best performances have come late in games as he has been forced into an up-tempo approach. He’s extremely dangerous in those situations. So it always seemed strange that, in the past, the Colts have shied away from allowing him to use an up-tempo offense unless it was necessary at the end of halves or late in the game when they were down.
Now he’ll be in a situation where his head coach is an offensive-minded guy who wants to push the tempo, and that should be a boon to the entire offense.
Of course, all this hinges on Luck’s health. He’s been out of commission for over a calendar year now after undergoing shoulder surgery at the beginning of 2017. However, recent news suggests his health is getting back on track, and he’s reportedly ready to start throwing again soon.
If Luck is healthy, then the Colts have a shot to win a bunch of games, especially in an offense that caters to his strengths.
