With a possible fire sale looming, the Miami Marlins might look a lot different in 2018 than they did in 2017. But one familiar face that will return is manager Don Mattingly.
President of baseball operations Michael Hill was asked about the manager’s job status. He not only made it clear that Mattingly will return, but also stated that it was never an issue.
“I didn’t know a decision had to be made,” Hill said, per Tim Healey of the Sun Sentinel. “He’s under contract. Just spoke to him today, he’s doing great.”
While the uniform will be the same, chances are that Mattingly will be managing a much different team.
Giancarlo Stanton has been oft discussed in trade rumors and recently, fellow outfielders Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna have drawn interest, as well.
Prior to his tenure in Miami, Mattingly managed the Los Angeles Dodgers for five seasons, going 446-363 with three NL West titles. In two years as the Marlins’ skipper, Mattingly has posted a 156-167 record, going 79-82 in 2016 and 77-85 in 2017.
