It’s never really a bad thing to see a head coach go to bat for his players in the media. But there’s also a happy medium between supporting your players and failing to understand the reality of a situation.
Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott falls into that latter category. Following his team’s humiliating 54-24 blowout loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, the first-year head coach lobbed some praise in the direction of rookie quarterback Nathan Peterman.
“Bills coach Sean McDermott said Monday that Nathan Peterman made some plays against the Chargers that were ‘pretty darn good’ despite his historically-poor overall result,” ESPN’s Mike Rodak noted.
Peterman threw five first half interceptions in his first NFL start. He was benched in favor of previous starter Tyrod Taylor immediately after halftime.
Look at it this way. Peterman completed one more pass (six) to his own team than he did to the Chargers (five) in a downright disastrous performance.
McDermott’s decision to bench Taylor in the first place drew a ton of criticism (more on that here).
Now that he’s seemingly not comprehending the level of Peterman’s failures on Sunday, one has to wonder exactly what is going through McDermott’s mind right now. At 5-5 on the season, the Bills find themselves in a bad spot. Tone-deaf comment such as this aren’t going to help the team’s cause.
