Following the blockbuster trade for Jimmy Garoppolo, the San Francisco 49ers are making yet another move at the quarterback position. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, San Francisco will release veteran signal caller Brian Hoyer.
The #49ers originally included QB Brian Hoyer in the trade to the #Patriots but he was taken out for comp. pick reasons. Now released.

Hoyer was signed by first-year head coach Kyle Shanahan and rookie general manager John Lynch to act as a stop-gap option until the 49ers found a franchise quarterback. That plan lasted less than six games after he was benched in favor of C.J. Beathard back in Week 6.
Now with Garoppolo on the roster, the 49ers have no real need for Hoyer. And in an interesting turn, the New England Patriots will reportedly have interest in the backup.
When Brian Hoyer is officially free, of course he has interest in the #Patriots. Tom Brady needs a backup. Safe to say they’ll be talking

San Francisco had originally planned to include Hoyer in the trade, but things didn’t work out in that regard. Hoyer, who started his career in New England, would be a perfect fit as Tom Brady’s primary backup now that Garoppolo is out on the left coast.
