The Miami Heat placed future Hall of Fame big man Chris Bosh on waivers earlier this week. It was a move that many expected after Bosh sat out the entire 2016-17 season due to complications from blood clots. It also saved Miami $25.3 million against the cap.
For his part, Bosh has now cleared waivers and is officially an unrestricted free agent.
“The Miami Heat is now officially free to go about spending all of its projected salary cap space after Chris Bosh cleared waivers shortly after 5 p.m. on Thursday,” the Miami Herald‘s Manny Navarro reported on Thursday.
Whether Bosh actually returns to the NBA hardwood remains to be seen. While he does want to play again, that will be left up to doctors associated with the NBA.
Bosh, 33, has played in a grand total of 97 games since the end of the 2013-14 campaign. If he’s healthy and 100 cleared by doctors, we’re pretty sure contending teams will show interest in the 11-time All-Star.
As it relates to Miami, freeing up Bosh’s cap space will help the team in free agency from here on out this summer.
Bosh played six seasons with the Heat, averaging 18.0 points and 7.3 rebounds en route to leading the team to two NBA titles. The Heat have already announced they plan on retiring Bosh’s jersey.
