Baseball seriously needs to do something to nip this in the bud. Â A day after all heck broke loose between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins, yet another ugly situation took hold during Sunday’s game between the division rival Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox.
Apparently as retaliation for a hard slide into second base Friday night, Boston pitcher Matt Barnes decided to throw at the head of Orioles All-Star third baseman Manny Machado. It was about as ugly as it gets.

That’s definitely a dangerous situation right there. And it obviously led to Barnes himself being tossed from the game. The sad thing about this is that Barnes was likely brought into the game in the eighth simply to head hunt in Machado’s direction. One has to wonder whether this will lead to Major League Baseball punishing Sox manager John Farrell. Both he and Orioles skipper Buck Showalter are of the old-school variety.
For what it’s worth here is a video of Machado taking out Dustin Pedroia on Friday night. That play led to Boston’s former MVP having to exit the game.

It’s going to be interesting to see what comes of this. But we wouldn’t be surprised if MLB stepped in here.
