Report: Giants ‘likely’ to put Buster Posey on DL

Buster Posey

The San Francisco Giants are likely to be without the services of Buster Posey for at least seven days. Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area is reporting that a DL stint is “likey” for Posey, after he was hit in the head with a pitch in Monday’s home opener.

Pavlovic added that while he’s not on the 40-man roster, catcher Tim Federowicz is in the ballpark ahead of Tuesday’s game.

While being without the services of baseball’s best catcher will be a detriment to San Francisco, this makes sense.

One, head injuries are just too serious. A season ago, the Giants saw second baseman Joe Panik hit with a pitch similar to the one Posey was struck with. Panik remained in the game and played for a few more days before concussion symptoms started to show. San Francisco does not want to let that happen with Posey, especially given how susceptible catchers are to foul balls in the head.

Two, if Posey’s injury was going to keep him out for more than 1-2 games, a DL stint is almost completely necessary. Posey and Nick Hundley are the only two catchers on the Giants’ roster. Given the significant injury risk the position carries and the specific skills needed to play catcher, a team can not have only one available backstop for anything close to the long term.

This would mark Posey’s second trip to the DL in his career. The first came in 2011, when a broken leg caused him to miss the season’s final four months.
