More dysfunction as Knicks’ player development assistant announces resignation

Knicks, Phil Jackson

The wheels are coming off the Phil Jackson Triangle express. Amid reports that Kristaps Porzingis missed the New York Knicks exit interviews and that players are in open revolt over Jackson’s favored offense, Chris Brickley, a player development assistant for the Knicks, has resigned.

Frank Isola of the New York Daily News clued us in on the decision, which Brickley announced on Twitter.

If this move had come all by itself, we’d barely take notice.

But since it comes on the heels of the organization’s reported decision to opt into the final two years of Jackson’s contract — a move we wholeheartedly disapprove of — and that the team is imploding as a result, we can only come to the conclusion that this is one more instance in which dysfunction is playing a major role.

Brickley, a former walk-on guard who played for Northwestern and Louisville, first got started with the Knicks before Phil Jackson joined the club as the president. He was brought on board as an entry-level trainer but worked his way up the ladder quickly within the organization.

Former head coach Rick Pitino has spoken in glowing terms about Brickley, who has a goal of one day becoming a coach.

“You knew Chris Brickley wanted to be a coach. He was a basketball junkie and wanted to learn the game,” Pitino said (h/t Bleacher Report). “If you believe in someone, I knew he could do a really good job. I’m not one that makes phone calls and recommends people that I don’t think would impact the franchise.”

Don’t be surprised if Brickley ends up landing on his feet with a new organization sooner, rather than later.
