Filed under our “unreasonable expectations” category, LaVar Ball continues to put a huge target on the back of his son, UCLA star Lonzo Ball.
Having already stated that Lonzo would be better than Stephen Curry one day, LaVar Ball took things a step further Saturday night. Watching his son play against USC, Ball said Lonzo is actually better than Curry … right now.

“I have the upmost confidence in what my boy is doing,” LaVar said. “I’m going to tell you right now, he’s better than Stephen Curry to me.”
Then LaVar took his hype game to plaid levels of absurdity.
“Put Steph Curry on UCLA’s team right now and put my boy on Golden State and watch what happens,” he said. “Steph going to have problems trying to guard my boy,” the father said. “Play 1 on 1.”
That Ball, a freshman at UCLA, is a tremendous young player is an undeniable truth. But these types of statements set up the young man for unreasonable expectations.
There have been countless talented young players who dominated at the high school and college levels, only to fall flat in the NBA. We’re not saying this will happen when Ball inevitably makes his way to the Association, but if he does the fall will be from such a height as to potentially crush the youth.
