The Houston Texans have been linked to former NFL wide receiver Wes Welker for some time now. It wasn’t for him to return to the field as a player after a one-year hiatus.
Instead, it was all about the Texans potentially giving Welker his first NFL coaching job.
On Monday, the team made that official. Per the team’s website, Welker has been hired by Houston as an offensive/special teams assistant.
There’s little doubt that Welker has the on-field experience and savvy to be a good coach. A 12-year veteran of the NFL, Welker is primarily known for his role in helping the New England Patriots to two AFC Championships in his six seasons with the team.
During that span, he was Tom Brady’s favorite target in the team’s passing game. Overall, Welker recorded 672 receptions for 7,459 yards in six seasons with the Patriots.
Welker, 35, last suited up as a receiver in the NFL for the then St. Louis Rams back in 2015. He also played for the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and Denver Broncos in a potentially Hall of Fame-worthy career.
