Seahawks first-round pick Germain Ifedi out with high-ankle sprain

Outside of the Miami Dolphins, this isn’t good for anyone involved. Seattle Seahawks rookie first-round pick Germain Ifedi reportedly suffered a high-ankle sprain in practice on Wednesday and will be out a few weeks.

The Texas A&M product was slated to start at right guard on a Seahawks offensive line that’s among the worst in the NFL. His debut would have come against Miami on Sunday.

Selecting him 31st overall in this year’s draft was seen as a bit of a reach, but Seattle needed to find talent along the unit after losing J.R. Sweezy and Russell Okung — the teams two-top offensive linemen — to free agency.

With Ifedi sidelined for the next few weeks, Rees Odhiambo will likely start at right guard in his stead.

That leaves Seattle with a starting offensive line that includes Bradley Sowell, Mark Glowinski, Justin Britt, Garry Gilliam and Odhiambo.

Offensive line coach Tom Cable surely has to work his magic here. If not, Russell Wilson could continue to see himself thrown to the turf on a consistent basis.

Equally as important as the possibility of Wilson being injured, a quarterback of his stature must have solid protection from the interior of the offensive line.

If that doesn’t happen, there’s going to be issues with turnovers. With Glowinski and Odhiambo starting at guard, there has to be major concerns heading into the season.

Wilson was sacked 45 times and pressured at a higher clip than any other quarterback in the NFL last season.
