There’s definitely something up here. Though, what it might be is anyone’s guess. It sure looks like Rodriguez has either been released or will announce his retirement.
The 41-year-old former MVP has seen a steep decline in production this season. He’s hitting at just .204 with nine homers and 29 RBI on the season.
Most recently, Rodriguez has seen his playing time dip significant in favor of younger players.
This comes on the heels of Mark Teixeira announcing his retirement, effective at the end of the season.
If the Yankees decide to release Rodriguez, they’d still be on the hook for his $21 million next season. Should he retire, that amount will come off the team’s payroll.
