With Tony Romo out for a while, the spotlight is on Dak Prescott as the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.
The good news for the Cowboys and their fans is that Prescott doesn’t lack confidence about being ready for the challenge.
“Yeah I’m ready,” Prescott said, per Clarence E. Hill Jr., The Fort Worth Star Telegram. “I’m excited about it. It’s an opportunity. It happened in an unfortunate way. But I’m definitely excited for my chance, my opportunity. I have confidence in myself, my teammates around me, just to go out there and be able to play relaxed, play as myself.”
Indeed. It’s a glorious opportunity.
While Jason Garrett won’t officially rule Prescott out for Week 1, the reality is that a broken bone in his back will likely keep him sidelined for a while.
Prescott will probably be under center for roughly half of the season in Dallas. If he plays well, he will prove himself to be the quarterback of the future. Given Romo’s history, that could come soon. If he plays well enough, Prescott could just usurp the starting job this season, similar to what Tom Brady did with Drew Bledsoe in 2001.
Prescott is saying the right things. Now, it’s imperative that he turn that into good regular season play.
If he does, this would not be the first time has won a job because of an injury. In both high school and college, Prescott replaced an injured quarterback and played so well that he never lost his job.
Prescott was asked if he thought history would repeat itself.
“Humph,” Prescott said, Per Hill. “I’m just going to do the same thing I did then, prepare to help my team win and be the best player I can be.”
If Prescott continues to play as well as he’s played during the preseason, that could well happen.
