New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, an important member of the team’s defense over the past eight seasons, has apparently announced his retirement from the National Football League.
Here’s what Mayo wrote on Instagram in making the announcement on Tuesday evening:

At just 29 years old, Mayo’s retirement has to be considered somewhat of a surprise. Though, he has suffered serious injuries in each of the past three seasons, each injury forcing the former first-round pick on to injured reserve. This past year, it was a torn peculiar muscle.
Mayo ends his NFL career having earned two trips to the Pro Bowl, two conference titles and a Lombardi Trophy. He started 93 games in his eight seasons with the Patriots, recording over 800 tackles with four interceptions and eight forced fumbles.
The Patriots will save $7 million against the cap with Mayo’ retirement, but will now have to fill the void left by the retirement of the veteran linebacker.
