After sending third-string quarterback Charlie Whitehurst to the IR on Monday, the Indianapolis Colts signed Josh Freeman to the active roster Tuesday, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Andrew Luck has been ruled out, as has Matt Hasselbeck, leaving Stephen Morris as the only other active quarterback on the roster before the signing. Morris was a 30-game starter at the University of Miami but he’s never played in an NFL game and isn’t a viable starter.
Freeman was thought to be a lost cause after stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings and most recently with the Miami Dolphins.
However, given the dire situation in Indianapolis right now, there’s a good chance Freeman will actually get the start.
The Colts have an outside chance of getting into the playoffs but would need a crazy mess of circumstances around the league for that to happen. At this point, it appears the season is a lost cause, and nobody should be surprised if the franchise undergoes a tremendous overhaul in the front office and with the coaching staff.
