Jarryd Hayne was waived by the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.
The 49ers promoted running back Kendall Gaskins to the active roster, per the team website, prompting the move to cut Hayne, who has been somewhat of a disappointment for the 49ers this season.
Appearing in six games for the 49ers, Hayne managed to carry the ball eight times for just 25 yards and returned eight punts for 76 yards, along with a couple costly fumbles.
The sensational moves that earned him the roster spot in the first place this preseason were rarely on display. That said, given the sad state of affairs in San Francisco right now this is just one more thing that didn’t work out the way the team planned in 2015.
The former Rugby League star might still have a future in the NFL, but it won’t be with the 49ers, at least for now.
