The NFL has reportedly handed down discipline to Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Sean Smith, and it’s a three-game ban.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke this news early Friday morning, citing a league source. He notes the discipline stems from Smith’s recent DUI, for which he pled guilty.
This isn’t surprising news. The Chiefs have known Smith could miss time to start the season since the cornerback received two years’ probation for his infraction. With training camp still yet to begin, the franchise has plenty of time to prepare for his absence to open the 2015 campaign.
Smith is the top cornerback on Kansas City’s roster. His size, at 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, combines wonderfully with above-average speed and quickness, which have served him well throughout his six-year career.
Without Smith in the lineup, the Chiefs may need to rely on rookie Marcus Peters out of Washington sooner than they had anticipated when he was drafted. The talented youngster has impressed this spring, but it’s one thing to do it in shorts and quite another to perform well in pads against the best of the best.
It’s not yet known if Smith will appeal this suspension, but even if he does it’s almost guaranteed the Chiefs will be without their star defensive back to open the season.
