Former first-round pick Michael Oher was waived by the Tennessee Titans on Thursday with an injury settlement. Starting all 11 games in 2014—his first season with the Titans—Oher put up an absolutely dreadful performance.
According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), the former first-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens finished as the 10th-worst offensive tackle in the NFL among a group of 84 qualified players.
The 28-year-old offensive tackle had just completed the first of a four-year, $20 million contract he signed with Tennessee last offseason. If Oher had remained on the Titans roster following Thursday, the team would have been on the hook for $3.4 million of his $4 million salary for next season.
An underwhelming performer at the NFL level, Oher’s biggest claim to fame comes from the movie Blindside starring Sandra Bullock, who received an Oscar nomination for her role as Oher’s adopted mother.
It remains to be seen just how much play Oher will get on the open market. Originally a left tackle after being selected in the first round of the 2009 draft, he had to switch to the right side of the line after failing as a blindside protector for then teammate Joe Flacco with the Ravens. Considering Oher is viewed as one of the worst-run blocking exterior linemen in the NFL, it’s unlikely that he will be able to move inside.
