John Reaves, a first-round pick of the Philadelphia Eagles back in 1972 has passed away. According to the Associated Press, Reaves was found dead in his Florida home on Tuesday. The cause of death is not currently known. He was 67.
“Reaves was found dead at his home Tuesday, according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office. The cause of death is being investigated,” the report read.
Reaves played 11 seasons in the NFL, including his first three with the Eagles. He also suited up for the Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings, Houston Oilers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers during a largely unassuming career.
Reaves’ struggles in the NFL came following a career at Florida that saw him finish with the most passing yards and passing touchdowns in program history.
Unfortunately, Reaves’ struggles off the field is what defined his life. The Alabama native dealt with substance abuse issues throughout his life and was arrested on drug possession charges back in 2008.
“It’s sad to see that John has passed on, but we’ll celebrate his life down there in Tampa with so many good friends and Gators,” Steve Spurrier said. “His memory will always be with us.”
Spurrier coached Reaves during the quarterback’s time in the USFL and hired him as an assistant with the Gators back in 1990.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Florida football program and Reaves’ family during these most difficult of times.
