New York Giants plan for Joe Judge, Daniel Jones to return for 2022 season

New York Giants

The New York Giants have five consecutive seasons with double-digit losses, leading to fans begging for sweeping changes this offseason that could launch a much-needed rebuild. Instead, the Giants are reportedly committed to the same process that has netted them 10 combined wins in the last two seasons.

In the midst of a five-year playoff drought, the Giants finishing near the bottom of the NFL standings has become the yearly expectation. When the organization cleaned house in 2018, it hired former Giants’ executive Dave Gettleman to become the general manager and he had two chances to find the right head coach.

While the Giants will be looking for a new general manager this offseason, it seems both the coach he hired and the quarterback drafted will get another chance to make things work.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Giants are planning to bring both Jones and Judge back for the 2022 season. While the organization is disappointed with the results in 2021, the team reportedly believes Judge and Jones deserve another opportunity.

While this would be disappointing for the fans, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. An NFL franchise that used to be a perennial playoff threat and won two Super Bowls since 2006 has fallen on hard times. Despite the obvious signs of sweeping changes being necessary, team president John Mara seems satisfied that his vision for the franchise will eventually work.

But there are even more reasons for the fan base to be concerned now. Even ignoring the Pepsi fiasco, the Giants seem unaware that their problems can’t be fixed by trying to replicate the New England Patriots model or just hiring familiar faces. Yet that appears to be exactly whats’s going to happen in 2022.

The leading candidate to replace Gettleman is general manager, Kevin Abrams, who has worked with the franchise since 1999. If New York decides to make an outside hire, it’s believed they’d want a Patriots’ executive who would have ties to Judge.

Until the entire process is changed, the New York Giants will likely keep repeating the same mistakes that led them to this point. But barring a sudden moment of clarity, this organization doesn’t seem any closer to figuring out its issues.
