A notable New York Mets insider has offered up a major update on speculation about the club improving the starting rotation during the summer.
The 2025 edition of the Mets has some big expectations. After surprising the baseball world last season with an unexpected run to the NLCS, they are hoping to go further this fall. And it is understandable why they have lofty aspirations.
Many of the key pieces from last season’s roster are back, and they added superstar outfielder Juan Soto to the mix. However, just like last season, their pitching staff seems like the club’s weakness. Furthermore, notable injuries during spring training are only making matters worse.
But there have been rumblings that the front office feels good about their rotation, despite the injuries, because of their depth. And while some doubt their staff, SNY MLB insider Andy Martino recently explained why President David Stearns believes in the talent they have.
“So I went up to him the other day before the game and said, ‘Hey, why do you think your starting pitching is good when the rest of the world doesn’t? What are we not seeing?’ We had a good conversation about it, and the way I sum it up is, No. 1, when they get guys like Griffin Canning or Paul Blackburn last year — who we think are kind of random — they have targeted those guys for one of a couple of things.

“There’s a pitch that they are throwing that’s trending up. Or if this guy made a mechanical adjustment that Jeremy Hefner could help him with, we think he would be better in this way. They are zeroing in on these guys.”
New York Mets expected to chase pitchers like Dylan Cease in the summer
However, Martino also mentioned that just because they are happy with their rotation does not mean they will not look to bolster it later this season.
“They are happy they have flexibility. Stearns can’t say this. But I hear and believe they are fully going to be in on Dylan Cease. And whoever else is available at the trade deadline. They like a starting rotation where they can take a Griffin Canning out later. They don’t have a lot of guys they are invested in that makes them inflexible to add.”
