Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings
- Update: Minnesota acquired Joshua Dobbs in a trade on Tuesday. Head coach Kevin O’Connell did note that the Vikings are preparing for Jaren Hall to starts, but Dobbs could be ready for Week 9.
Cousins suffered a torn Achilles in Minnesota’s Week 8 win over the Green Bay Packers, ending his season in the process. This came after a brilliant start to his season in which Cousins threw 18 touchdowns compared to five interceptions in eight games.
At 4-4, the Vikings are not seeking help via a trade. Rookie Jaren Hall will likely get the start over the short-term with veteran Nick Mullens currently on injured reserve. Fellow veteran Sean Mannion is on the Vikings’ practice squad, too.
Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams
Update: Matthew Stafford did not practice on Wednesday, leaving open the possibility that he misses Sunday’s game against the Packers.
Rams head coach Sean McVay noted on Monday that Stafford suffered a UCL sprain in his throwing thumb and is considered day-to-day. Stafford didn’t finish Sunday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Though, that could have been because it was a blowout.
We’ll know more about Stafford’s status for Week 9 against the Green Bay Packers moving forward in the week. If he’s unable to go, veteran journeyman Brett Rypien will get the start. The expectation is that Los Angeles will also look outside of the organization for a reinforcement. We’ll have updates on Stafford’s status moving forward in our NFL Week 9 injury report.
Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals
Update: Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon says we will not know Murray’s status for Week 9 until the inactives are announced on Sunday.
Murray was designated for return from injured reserve after suffering a torn ACL last season. He practiced with the Cardinals on this past week. Even then, there is no telling when he’ll suit up again.
Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon did announce on Monday that Joshua Dobbs has been benched before he was traded. He’s no longer QB1. It will be between Murray and rookie mid-round pick Clayton Tune as it relates to Arizona’s starter Week 9 against the Cleveland Browns. If Arizona deems Murray to be 100% recovered from his torn ACL, he should be the starter. Though, indications are that Tune will be the man under center.
Justin Fields, Chicago Bears
- Update: Justin Fields has been ruled out against the Saints for Week 9.
Fields missed his second consecutive game Sunday night against the Los Angeles Chargers with a dislocated throwing thumb. Ahead of the game, Bears head coach Matt Eberflus indicated that the team is happy where Fields is as he looks to return at some point in the not-so-distant future.
“He’s going to be working through his window right now,” Eberflus said. “We’ll talk about that more next week. We don’t know exactly where he is in terms of the movement and all those things, but [he’s] with the trainer, he’s working good.”
Undrafted rookie free agent Tyson Bagent got his second consecutive start in Fields’ stead, completing 25-of-37 passes for 232 yards with zero touchdowns and two interceptions in the blowout 30-13 loss. Fields has already been ruled out for Week 9 with Bagent getting the start against the New Orleans Saints.
Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns
- Update: Deshaun Watson told reporters on Thursday that he’s still unsure whether he’ll play Week 9.
Watson once again finds himself on our NFL injury report heading into Week 9. He exited in the first quarter of Week 7’s game against the Indianapolis Colts after missing each of the past two outings with a shoulder injury. As of right now, Watson considered questionable for Week 9 against the Arizona Cardinals. If he can’t go, P.J. Walker will get another start for Cleveland after throwing two interceptions in last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Kenny Pickett, Pittsburgh Steelers
- Update: Kenny Pickett told reporters on Tuesday that he’ll be ready to go Thursday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Pickett exited in the first half of Pittsburgh’s Week 8 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars with a rib injury and did not return to action. Mitchell Trubisky replaced him under center, completing 15-of-27 passes for 138 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Pickett is now considered questionable for Thursday night’s game against the Tennessee Titans. Though, he might be hard-pressed to play on a short week. A more detailed update should be provided Wednesday at the latest.
Daniel Jones, New York Giants
- Update: Daniel Jones told reporters that barring any setbacks, he’ll be able to go Sunday against the Raiders.
Jones has missed the past three games with a neck injury. And while it seemed that he was at least a week away from returning, the struggling quarterback has been cleared for full contact and could be a go against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 9. This is no small thing for the two-win Giants given that stopgap starter Tyrod Taylor is dealing with a rib injury that had him in the hospital on Monday.
Week 9 NFL injury report: Running backs
Player | Team | Injury | Backup | Status |
Derrick Henry | Titans | Ankle | Tyjae Spears | Questionable |
De’Von Achane | Dolphins | Knee | Raheem Mostert | OUT |
Kyren Williams | Rams | Ankle | Zach Evans | INJURED RESERVE |
James Conner | Cardinals | Knee | Emari Demercado | OUT |
Khalil Herbert | Bears | Ankle | D’Onta Foreman | INJURED RESERVE |
Nick Chubb | Browns | Knee | Kareem Hunt | OUT for season |
J.K. Dobbins | Ravens | Achilles | Gus Edwards | OUT for season |
Derrick Henry, Tennessee Titans
The subject of trade rumors leading up to Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline, Henry is dealing with an ankle injury. It could impact him on a short week leading up to Thursday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. If Henry can’t go, impressive youngster Tyjae Spears (5.8 yards per attempt this season) would handle RB1 duties.
Week 9 NFL injury report: Wide receivers
Player | Team | Injury | Backup | Status |
Drake London | Falcons | Groin | Mack Hollins | Questionable |
Kendrick Bourne | Patriots | ACL | JuJu Smith-Schuster | OUT FOR SEASON |
Deebo Samuel | 49ers | Shoulder | Ray-Ray McCloud | BYE WEEK |
Justin Jefferson | Vikings | Hamstring | N’Keal Harry | INJURED RESERVE |
Zay Jones | Jaguars | Knee | Tim Jones | OUT |
Mike Williams | Chargers | ACL | Quentin Johnston | OUT FOR SEASON |
Deebo Samuel, San Francisco 49ers
Samuel exited San Francisco’s Week 6 loss to the Cleveland Browns due to a shoulder injury. At least initially, there was some concern that this would be a long-term injury. Instead, Samuel missed the past two weeks to injury. He should be able to return following San Francisco’s Week 9 bye.
Justin Jefferson, Minnesota Vikings
Jefferson will be sidelined for at least one more game after being placed on IR due to a hamstring injury he suffered back in Week 5. With the game’s best receiver sidelined Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers, Jordan Addison stepped up big time (7 receptions, 123 yards, 2 TD). He then added seven catches for 82 yards and a touchdown in Minnesota’s Week 8 win over Green Bay. Unfortunately, the season-ending injury quarterback Kirk Cousins suffered could impact Addison from a fantasy perspective moving forward.
Kendrick Bourne, New England Patriots
New England’s leading receiver suffered a torn ACL in Week 8 and is out for the remainder of the season. Bourne had tallied 37 receptions for 406 yards and four touchdowns in parts of eight games prior to suffering the injury. With DeVante Parker also injured, this puts New England behind the proverbial eight-ball at wide receiver. Perhaps, Jalen Reagor and JuJu Smith-Schuster can step up.
Week 9 NFL injury report: Tight ends
Player | Team | Injury | Backup | Status |
Dawson Knox | Bills | Wrist | Dalton Kincaid | OUT |
Darren Waller | Giants | Hamstring | Daniel Bellinger | Questionable |
Pat Freiermuth | Steelers | Hamstring | Darnell Washington | INJURED RESERVE |
Greg Dulcich | Broncos | Leg | Adam Trautman | Doubtful |
Dawson Knox, Buffalo Bills
Knox is slated to have wrist surgery and is out indefinitely, head coach Sean McDermott noted on Tuesday. The Bills’ TE1 has caught just 15 passes for 102 yards this season. With him sidelined, rookie Dalton Kincaid will continue to see major play from Josh Allen. He tallied eight catches for 75 yards last week against the New England Patriots.
Darren Waller, New York Giants
Waller is dealing with a hamstring injury that will cost him at least a couple of games. He’ll moss what would have been an outing against his former Raiders team on Sunday. Look for Saquon Barkley to receive a larger target share in this one.
