The NASCAR Cup, Xfinity, and Truck Series schedules are out.
As is the case every four years, the Olympics airing on the NBC family of networks necessitates the industry to make some changes that wouldn’t typically manifest in a normal season.
For example, the two-week break between the returning Brickyard 400 on July 20 and Michigan on August 17 has resulted in the Southern 500 becoming the regular season finale on Labor Day weekend as opposed to the playoff opener. Â The summer Daytona race has found a new home in August as the regular season finale over the past three years but is now the penultimate race of the regular season.
The playoffs will undergo a shift, both intentional and as a result of the forced summer break, as the first round now includes races at Atlanta and Watkins Glen — leaving the championship-deciding stretch to feature two drafting tracks and two road courses.
That also means the fall Charlotte Motor Speedway race will remain on the infield road course.
Iowa Speedway was made official on Tuesday as a replacement race for Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, which is undergoing a transformation into a half-mile short track over the next year or so. NASCAR had hoped to schedule a race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, but was unable to come to terms with the venue promoters.
Previously announced were the return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval following three years of racing on the road course and Bristol Motor Speedway returning to two races on the concrete surface after running three dirt races during the spring.
