The MLB All-Star Game is one of the best traditions in sports, with the best players in Major League Baseball coming together for one exhibition game to showcase their talent.

MLB used to use its Midsummer Classic to determine home-field advantage in the World Series. From 2003-2016, the league that won the MLB All-Star Game would have the home-field advantage in the following World Series. However, that policy was ditched in 2017 with MLB now making it a pure exhibition game.

This will be the 93rd All-Star Game in MLB history between the National League and the American League. After holding the Midsummer Classic at Dodger Stadium in 2022 and in NL parks for two consecutive years, the AL will get to serve as host in July.

Here’s everything you should know about the 2023 MLB All-Star Game along with the 2022 results, 2024 location and our early projections for the All-Star Game lineups.

MLB All-Star Game predictions 2023: National League lineup

  1. Luis Arraez, 2B, Miami Marlins
  2. Ronald Acuña Jr, OF, Atlanta Braves
  3. Freddie Freeman, 1B, Los Angeles Dodgers
  4. Juan Soto, OF, San Diego Padres
  5. Nolan Arenado, St. Louis Cardinals
  6. Corbin Carroll, OF, Arizona Diamondbacks
  7. Fernando Tatis Jr, DH, San Diego Padres
  8. Thairo Estrada, SS, San Francisco Giants
  9. Sean Murphy, C, Atlanta Braves

Starting at catcher for the National League lineup in the 2023 MLB All-Star Game is Sean Murphy. The Atlanta Braves star is the best catcher in MLB right now, ranking third in Catcher Framing Runs (six), fWAR (3.0) and second in wRC+ (147).

Moving to the infield, Miami Marlins second baseman Luis Arraez and Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman are clear selections for the NL All-Star Game lineup. Freeman leads all NL first basemen in wRC+ and fWAR, ranks top-five in RBI and is first in OPS. Meanwhile, Arraez leads MLB in batting average and is the first player in decades to hit .400-plus through 65 games.

On the other side of the infield for the NL, San Francisco Gants infielder Thairo Estrada is deserving of an MLB All-Star Game selection. He leads NL shortstops in batting average (.282), OPS (.794), wRC+ (117) and his impact on wins and losses transcends a strong season by Dansby Swanson with the Chicago Cubs. At third base, we’re giving the nomination to Nolan Arenado. After a cold start to the season, Arenado boasts a .934 OPS (1st among NL third baseman), 1.5 fWAR (second) with a .294 batting average, 13 home runs and 36 RBI in the last two months.

Our three choices for the NL in the outfielder are San Diego Padres’ Juan Soto, Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. and Arizona Diamondbacks rookie Corbin Carroll. From May 1 – June 9, Soto boasted a .463 OBP with a 183 wRC+ and 20 RBI in just 34 games. Meanwhile, Acuña Jr. and Carroll represent our top NL MVP candidates.

In our designated hitter spot, the spot is awarded to Los Angeles Dodgers hitter J.D. Martinez, who has enjoyed a career rejuvenation in Los Angeles this season.

MLB All-Star Game rosters: Projecting American League lineup

  1. Shohei Ohtani, DH, Los Angeles Angels
  2. Corey Seager, SS, Texas Rangers
  3. Yandy Diaz, 1B, Tampa Bay Rays
  4. Jose Ramirez, 3B, Cleveland Guardians
  5. Randy Arozarena, OF, Tampa Bay Rays
  6. Marcus Semien, 2B, Texas Rangers
  7. Luis Robert, OF, Chicago White Sox
  8. Alex Verdugo, OF, Boston Red Sox
  9. Jonah Heim, C, Texas Rangers

In the American League, the starting spot at catcher goes to Jonah Heim of the Texas Rangers. He leads Adley Rutschman in fWAR (2.6 vs 1.5), Defensive Runs Saved (six vs one), leads the position in RBI (54( and ranks second in wRC+ (118).

Near the middle of the lineup and playing second base for the AL in our All-Star Game lineup is Marcus Semien. The Texas Rangers star boasts the longest hitting streak in 2023 and is in the mix to win AL MVP and his scorching-hot first two months of the season is more than enough to make up for a bad June. At first base, Yandy Diaz of the Tampa Bay Rays leads his peers in batting average, slugging, OPS, home runs, wRC+ and fWAR by a significant margin.

After having Wander Franco as our starting American League shortstop in the MLB All-Star Game, we’re now giving it to Corey Seager. While he missed time on the injured list, Seager (1.060 OPS) is the only shortstop with a .900-plus OPS and his wRC+ (187) far outpaces Franco and Bo Bichette. Playing third base, perennial All-Star Jose Ramirez lands the starting spot thanks to a .302 batting average, .890 SKG and 142 wRC+ since May 1.

Completing our lineup for the American League, Randy Arozarena (.912 OPS), Luis Robert (.295 BA, 2.4 fWAR, .979 OPS since May 1) and Alex Verdugo (.303 BA, 130 wRC+) receive the starting spots with Yordan Alvarez and Aaron Judge sidelined through early July.

Rounding out our MLB All-Star Game lineup projections for the AL, serving as the designated hitter, Shohei Ohtani is the best player in baseball this year. He’s the runaway choice for AL MVP and should be the leadoff hitter for the American League in the 2023 MLB All-Star Game.
