It’s highly unlikely that Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson will be traded this offseason. Months ago, the reigning NFL passing champion requested to be dealt from the downtrodden organization. Once that became public record, north of 20 women came forward accusing Watson of sexual assault and/or sexual misconduct.
Everything now seems to be in a holding pattern as the civil lawsuits play out off the field. Should something come to a culmination on that end, there’s a chance that Watson could be moved.
If so, Watson’s former teammate with the Texans thinks he’s headed out west. Current Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson had this to say recently regarding where the Pro Bowl signal caller wants to be traded.
It’s no surprise that the Denver Broncos are being linked to Deshaun Watson. They had interest in the elite signal caller prior to the aforementioned allegations became public record. Denver is also favored to land reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers in a trade with the Green Bay Packers.
New Broncos general manager George Paton brought in former Pro Bowler Teddy Bridgewater to compete for the starting job with incumbent Drew Lock while avoiding quarterback in the top 10 of the 2021 NFL Draft. Objectively, neither Bridgewater or Lock can be seen as the long-term solutions for a Broncos team that has not had a franchise signal caller since Peyton Manning’s retirement.
Does Deshaun Watson to the Denver Broncos make sense?
Let’s say for a second that the civil cases end in Watson’s favor or he settles out of court. If that were to happen before Week 1, he could very well be traded. Houston has added three quarterbacks to the mix this offseason, including presumptive starter Tyrod Taylor and rookie third-round pick Davis Mills. It is obviously preparing for a future without Watson.
The question would then become compensation headed back to the Texans and how Deshaun Watson might fit in the Broncos’ quarterback room. Either Bridgewater or Lock would be relegated to third-string duties with the latter potentially being sent back to Houston in a trade.
As for compensation, the Texans were previously said to be demanding three first-round picks and a couple players for Watson. We’re not sure how realistic that asking price is right now.
In addition to the troubling off-field allegations, the number of teams in need of a potential franchise quarterback has dwindled since the 2021 NFL Draft.
The New York Jets (Zach Wilson), San Francisco 49ers (Trey Lance), Chicago Bears (Justin Fields) and New England Patriots (Mac Jones) all selected signal callers in the first round of the annual event. Each of these four teams were said to be in on Deshaun Watson. Meanwhile, the Carolina Panthers traded for Sam Darnold and opted to pick up his option for the 2022 season.
Right now, the Miami Dolphins and Washington Football Team are two organizations who might join the Broncos in still having interest in Watson. Of course, all of this depends on his legal situation and whether the aforementioned Rodgers is traded by Green Bay.
